Basic
USSD(Unstructured Supplementary Services Data)는 GSM 네트워크로부터 정보나 특정한 명령을 전송하는 수단으로 사용된다. USSD는 SMS 서비스와 같이 시그널링 채널(Signaling channel)을 사용하는 점에서 유사하나, USSD는 SMS 서비스와는 달리 저장후 전송방식이 아니라 데이터 서비스처럼 통신경로 설정 해제 방식이다. USSD의 문자길이는 182자 까지 가능하다.
USSD는 GSM 표준 02.90(USSD Stage 1)과 03.90(USSD Stage 2)에 정의되어 있으며, Stage 1에서는 서비스의 초기화가 단말기로부터 시작되며 Stage 2 에서는 양방향을 제공한다.
Advantage
- USSD는 저장후 전송방식이 아니므로 전송속도가 SMS 서비스에 비해 최대 7배 정도 빠르다. - 사용자는 USSD 서비스를 이용하기 위해 특정 메뉴로의 접근은 필요치 않으며 간단한 USSD 명령어를 입력함으로서 가능하다.(ex. *1234# SEND: 시간정보) - USSD 명령어는 사용자가 등록한 네트워크의 HLR(Home Location Register)로 보내지기 때문에 다른 네트워크 영역에서도 USSD 명령어의 변화가 없다. - USSD 서비스는 현존하는 모든 단말기에서 가능하다. - SIM Application Toolkit이나 WAP(Wireless Application Protocol)기능이 USSD를 이용하여 구현된다.
Disadvantage
- USSD 명령어는 사용자가 기억하기에 혼란을 준다. - ex. *1234# -> 시간정보, *1235# -> 날씨정보, ... - 그러나 폰북(전화번호 저장기능)에 저장할 수 있으므로 꼭 기억할 필요는 없다.

홍콩(스마트폰)
홍콩의 네트워크 사업자 스마트폰에선 사용자가 USSD 를 사용해 정보를 요구하면 사용자는 SMS 메시지로 계좌정보, 여행정보등을 수신해 볼 수 있다.
영국(보다폰)
영국의 네트워크 사업자 보다폰에선 사용자가 USSD를 사용해 정보를 요구하면 사용자는 자신의 전화번호를 잊어버렸을 경우에 대비하여 자신의 전화번호를 받아볼 수 있다.
